During the early years of home video laserdiscs were introduced to the market. While they had better sound and picture, VCRs dominated the market because they could record programs too. Laserdiscs bit the dust (along with VCRs) after DVDs came to market. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the RCA discs had to be played on one of their players.

No. However there was for a time another "disc" format called CED video discs. These album/laser disc sized platters were contained inside a plastic holder. You inserted the disc into the slot opening on its dedicated player until you heard a click and then pulled out the plastic holder. The disc was very much like a record album in that a needle "read" the information on the disc.
