What's Up, Doc? at The Castro

I've talked about the What's Up, Doc? screening before but I wanted to show you the Peter Bogdanovich picture during the Q&A on the stage. Most of what he had to say he said on the DVD commentary, but it was great to see and hear him in person. The Castro was the perfect venue to show this movie in San Francisco. The theater was packed and seeing the film on the big screen with an appreciative audience beats watching the DVD at home any time.

P.S. Nickelodeon was a stinker.

Barbra sued

Having had my kitchen and bathroom remodeled, I know how difficult it is to find a good contractor!

Funny Lady film capsule

Another clipping from my collection. I don't know from what (which means I probably cut it out of a magazine from the school library), but something tells me it's from one of the women's magazines of the day.

Redford + Streisand

Robert Redford's birthday was last week ("Happy birthday Bob") and turned 75. NBC Nightly News did a report about it. Not surprisingly, they opened the piece with a clip from The Way We Were (I was expecting that). Later they showed some unpublished images from a Life cover story they did on him back in 1970. One of the clips showed Robert Redford at Times Square hailing a taxi. When I saw the image I flipped out! It's hard to tell, but if you look closely in the background you can see the Criterion theater marquee. . . .and they were still showing the roadshow version of Funny Girl!

This is Hot

Today is one of my favorite days. Anytime a new Streisand album comes out is one of my favorite days (along with any new Streisand film opening release dates). Of course I'm aging myself when I refer to it as an album. It use to be so simple then. You went to your record store and bought the album and listened to it after school or work. Later, you could by the CD at lunch time and listen to it at work if you were lucky enough to have a CD drive on your computer. It didn't matter where you bought it.
Now you have to decide. Do you order the special edition package with DVD on QVC? Do you order the single or double CD at Target? Do you order the special edition CD at Starbucks? Or do you download the music file to your phone? Too many options!
Call me old fashioned but I prefer the album.

Don't believe what you read Part 20

I've lost count on how many "don't believe what you read" posts I've published so I'm gonna continue from Part 20.
I don't remember if she actually promoted A Star is Born in Europe, Australia, and Japan but I certainly know there was no concert tour during this period.
What's interesting is the movies she apparently was considering. Barbra as a clown in a circus? I don't think so. Barbra as a murderer going to the electric chair? Interesting, but unlikely. Barbra is no Susan Hayward. Can't see her remaking I Want to Live.
I'm happy with the choice Jon and Barbra eventually made- The Main Event!

Funny Lady - Yentl double feature

A few years ago (forgive me, I don't remember the exact year - maybe 2003/2004) the Egyptian theater in Hollywood screened a double feature of Funny Lady/ Yentl. Sounds like a strange combination but it was part of a program featuring musicals of the '70s and '80s.
Carole Wells was there. She's the one with the "nice set of beads" from Funny Lady.

She shared some stories about the filming of the movie along with some juicy gossip about Barbra.

The Way We Were at the Ziegfeld

The Way We Were had a limited run at the Ziegfeld theater in NYC back in Sept. 2003. Went to the Sunday evening screening with a small but appreciative crowd.

A Star is Born original artwork

The original piece of art was drawn by yours truly back in December 1976. We were studying poetry in our English class and our assignment was to write down a poem and illustrate it. We were allowed to used songs as poems (our high school back in the '70s wasn't too demanding). I had the sountrack album since Thanksgiving so my song was Evergreen and this was the accompanying artwork. I seem to remember just tracing over the album cover (don't you just love album covers!). You could really study them back then.
