The Way We Were filming locations Part 28

My camera should have been way lower to get the same shot. Next time.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 27

The library scene was one of my favorite scenes in the movie. But on the other hand, virtually all the scenes in the movie were my favorite. (I may be off by one row of columns in this shot).

The Way We Were filming locations Part 26

The library isn't a library- who knew? (We're back at Union College now).

The Way We Were filming locations Part 25

Eeck!
This is a rough guess where "America the Beautiful" sat in the movie. The other shots of the interior are just as depressing- so let's move on, there's nothing to see here.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 24

Not much left from the movie in this shot. The ladies who work there said that the door is original.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 23

The other buildings on the street looked like they hadn't been altered much- just the most important one on the block!
The ladies who worked at the title company were very nice and let me photograph the inside. They were aware that the building was used in the movie.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 22

Uh, yeah.
Sadly, the "Good Whip Restaurant" is no more. It was an ice crean parlor in real life at the time of filming. It is now a title company. Well, that's progress I guess. It's located in Ballston Spa, about a 30 minute drive from Schenectady.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 21

I refuse to support. . . . .c'mon everybody, everybody.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 20

As I mentioned before, the Nott memorial building has been "de-vined". Gotta admit the building looks better now without it.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 19

I didn't climb the statue for a "Redford moment". I also didn't put the green beads in the statues hand.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 18

I posted an older photo of this scene back in May, but I'm posting it again (with a more current shot) for continuity.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 17

I've posted two modern shots for the same movie image. The lighting in both pictures isn't the greatest. The middle image was taken recently and the bottom image was taken about 5 years ago.
The middle image captures the same area as the movie scene, however, you can't see the buildings on the outside. The space is now used as a student break room.
I'm including the bottom picture because you can see the exterior buildings better. A few years ago, the space was used as a meeting room.
It's still disappointing that the classroom and student chairs no longer exist.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 16

Couldn't figure out why the statue and building are off center when I framed the shot between the gate railings. Where's Harry Stradling, Jr. when you need him?

The Way We Were filming locations Part 15

This shot isn't from the exact window as the movie. I had to move down to another one to get a decent shot. One of the biggest problems in shooting locations is trees and landscaping that gets in the way. You can still see the road (now paved) and the sidewalk.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 14

The sorority girls are gone. The clock on the mantle is still there!

The Way We Were filming locations Part 13

The stairs leading down to the 1st floor have been relocated. The interior has been completely modernized. The exterior columns outside are still there though.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 12

The Reamer Campus Center was extensively remodeled in 1995, but this is the approximate location for the shot. This scene continues in Part 13.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 11

As you can see, the old running track is no longer there. A new modern stadium is located behind me in this shot.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 10

I had to move over to the left in order to get this shot. The tree blocks your view of the background building.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 9

A couple of trees are missing. The Nott memorial building has been "de-vined".

The Way We Were filming locations Part 8

Bit of trivia for you- the traditional building behind Barbra is the Schaffer library and it was built in 1960. So it would not have existed during the time the story takes place. Incidentally, it is not the location of the "library scene" from the movie that takes place later.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 7

Got a Robert Redford story for you. Ready? I auditioned for a Robert Redford movie! Seriously!
It was The Great Waldo Pepper, after The Way We Were came out. They were filming in different small towns in Texas and somehow my mom knew they were looking for young boys between a certain age (don't remember the exact ages). Ended up reading a scene and did terrible! I had never read a script before. Who knew that you weren't suppose to read what is in the parentheses? I was reading it like I was just reciting it normally.
On top of that, they ended up going with someone younger! Hollywood discriminates at all ages it seems.

The Way We Were filming locations Part 6

It's time to go back to college and reminsence about The Way We Were. October and November are going to be dedicated to this film and the filming locations.
Union College in Schnectady, New York doubled for the college campus flashback scenes. Jackson's Garden is where Robert Redford jogged during the opening credits.
