I can't guarantee this is the exact location of the ballroom scene. I did talk to an employee at the hotel who started working there in 1973 and she claims this is the location. Obviously, the space has been remodelled (probably a few times since filming). Not much to go on to verify this is the space.

The Beverly Hills Hotel has been remodeled since filming. The stairs on the left are no longer there and the room numbers have changed. This is the main hallway of the hotel.
On a side note, when I was leaving the hotel an old man was slowly walking up to the front door . . . . it was Elton John!

I photographed the top photo of the free-standing ticket booth on one of my studio tours of Warner Brother's back lot. I, of course, instantly recognized it from For Pete's Sake (I'm sure you do, too). Nobody else on the tour seemed to appreciate it's Streisand pedigree. Go figure, everyone was into those Harry Potter movies. It's still in use today as seen in this clip from Big Bang Theory.

Getting into this area of Union Station has been elusive to me so far. Every time I go to L.A. I make a special trip here to see if it's open. So far no luck. The best I can do is photograph it through a window. Eventually, I will get inside and get better shots.

The above image is a screen capture from a documentary feature about the controversial film I Am Curious . . . .Yellow (the film is extremely mild by today's standards, and boring). The camera pans down to the bottom on the list to show where the film is listed. However, in the panning process you can see a cropped view of some of the top movies of the period. If you examine closely and fill in the blanks, you can see Hello, Dolly! at number 6 after 12 weeks on the chart and Funny Girl at number 13 after 77 weeks on the chart.

One more clipping about A Star is Born screenings in San Antonio. These theaters were from later in the release of the film. The Aztec was a movie palace downtown. It's been remodeled for performances after sitting empty for years. The San Pedro drive in is now a grocery store and shopping center. The Woodlawn is a local performing arts theater now. The U.A. Movies 4 was on the South side and has been closed for a while.

There is still a firefighter stationed here that was there when they filmed the movie. Of course I asked him for any stories he had to share. He mentioned that some of the firefighters were taking pictures with their cameras and security came by and demanded they turn over their film. So they weren't too happy about that. (But they should have known better if you ask me). He also mentioned that Barbra was "too chicken" to slide down the pole. I'd have to agree with him on that. This was the one scene where you knew it wasn't her. I felt cheated with this scene (along with the rest of the audience). This was the signature scene that was used in the advertising and poster to promote the movie and it's not her. Is it that difficult to slide down the pole? (and in case you're wondering, no, I didn't slide down the pole myself).

I wasn't able to capture all the lockers in this shot because there is a wall directly behind me that wasn't there 30 years ago. At the time of filming they only had one large locker room for men. They added a wall to allow for a women's locker room.

For some reason, the fire chief was really interested in the communication equipment attached to the brick wall in this photo from the movie. Whatever it was, it's not there now. He wanted to know when the movie was filmed. I told him 1980. But he wanted to know the month that this scene was shot. I took a wild guess and said June. It was around that time. He even wanted to keep the photo. I wasn't going to complain. He was most accomodating to my request to photograph the premises.

The Italian restaurant in the movie has been completely redone as a bar. When I was there, the place was packed. Most of them must have been unemployed actors because while I'm walking around with my camera and comparing my photos with the location now, a couple of them said they wanted to be in whatever I was doing. Maybe they thought I was scouting locations for a potential film or photo shoot. There were a couple of wood-paneled columns that I could identify from the movie, but that was it. I didn't photograph them because of the crowd. The hallway above is about the only other thing I could find. The manager of the bar didn't know that they filmed All Night Long here and she was excited when I told her because her mother is a big Barbra Streisand fan.

In case you're wondering how in the heck did I find this location- Kevin Dobson told me. I also asked him about the anniversary scene where Barbra gets doused in milk, but he didn't remember where they filmed that scene. He also doesn't know where the loft is. Not that I'm complaining. I should start by saying I'm not 100% sure if this movie scene was shot on location or in the studio. However the bottom photo is the door to room #407 as it looks today (the room number is now off to the left outside the shot). Watching the movie, I get the impression that this was shot on location. The hallway was very tight and the doors appear in the same layout as it appears in the movie. If it was built on a sound stage the set designer could have created any type of interior he wanted. It wouldn't be necessary to recreate an exact duplicate of the real location.

I can tell you that the door does belong to a corner unit but I was not allowed inside as the room was occupied. The front desk lady escorted me up to this floor. She said that if the room was vacant she would have let me in. But it is one of the units with the rounded corner like in the movie. I would assume that the room would be recreated on a set. It would be tight squeeze to fit a whole crew inside a small hotel room and get all the shots from the different angles as they did. So if they went to the expense of building a set for the hotel room they probably included a recreation of the hallway.

So it's a toss-up.

You recogonize the top photograph from the movie. The middle photograph is what the location looks like today. You might think that the Kentucky Fried Chicken store was torn down, but it's just blocked from view. They added a strip shopping center in the parking lot between the Ultra-Save store and the KFC store. The Kentucky Fried Chicken building is still there (see bottom photo) although it's no longer a KFC.
